Quick answer: A business day is any day from Monday to Friday that is not a public holiday. Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays do not count. So when a bank, courier, or employer says “3-5 business days”, they mean 3 to 5 working weekdays, which can stretch to a full week or more on the calendar.
You see the phrase everywhere: delivery estimates, bank transfers, refund promises, job contracts. Yet few pages explain it in plain words. This guide covers what counts, what does not, and how to count business days without getting the date wrong.
What is a business day?
Merriam-Webster defines a business day as “a weekday that is not a holiday”. In practice, it is a day when banks, offices, and government services are open and processing work as usual.
US banking law uses the same idea. Regulation CC, the rule that governs how banks handle deposits and cheques, treats a business day as any calendar day other than a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday (12 CFR Part 229).
Three points matter most:
- Weekends never count. Saturday and Sunday are always skipped.
- Public holidays do not count, even when they fall on a weekday.
- The clock follows the other side’s calendar. A holiday in the country or state doing the processing pauses your count, even if it is a normal day where you live.
Business day vs calendar day vs working day
These three terms sound alike, but they can give you three different dates.
| Term | What it means | Weekends | Public holidays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business day | Any day from Monday to Friday when banks and offices operate | Not counted | Not counted |
| Calendar day | Every day on the calendar, with no exceptions | Counted | Counted |
| Working day | A day a specific person or company actually works | Depends on their schedule | Depends on their schedule |
The gap is bigger than most people expect. Five business days is one full work week, but it covers at least seven calendar days. Add a public holiday and it becomes eight. This is why a “5 business day” delivery can legally arrive more than a week after you ordered.
Is Saturday a business day?
For banks, courts, and most contracts: no. Saturday is part of the weekend, so it never counts. Money sent on a Saturday does not start moving until Monday at the earliest, because the payment networks behind banks do not settle on Saturdays.
There are three exceptions worth knowing:
- A shop being open does not make it a business day. Many bank branches and stores open on Saturday, but their back-office processing still follows the Monday to Friday calendar.
- Some couriers deliver on Saturdays. USPS, UPS, and FedEx all deliver some Saturday volume, so a parcel can arrive on a Saturday even though the day does not count in the quoted estimate.
- One mortgage rule counts Saturday. Under US lending rules, Saturday counts as a business day when working out the deadline to cancel certain home loans. It is a narrow exception, but it shows why you should always check which definition a document is using.
Is Friday a business day?
In the US, UK, and most of the world: yes. Friday is a normal business day, and work processed on a Friday counts that same day, subject to cut-off times (see below).
The main exceptions are regional. The UAE federal government has worked a four-and-a-half-day week since 1 January 2022, with Friday a half day and Saturday and Sunday as the weekend (UAE Government Media Office). Several other Gulf countries still keep a Friday and Saturday weekend, so Friday is not a business day there at all.

How long is 3-5 business days?
It depends on the day you start. The count normally begins on the next business day after your order, payment, or request. The start day itself is day zero.
This table assumes no public holidays in between:
| You start on | 3 business days ends | 5 business days ends |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Thursday (3 calendar days later) | Next Monday (7 calendar days) |
| Tuesday | Friday (3 calendar days later) | Next Tuesday (7 calendar days) |
| Wednesday | Next Monday (5 calendar days later) | Next Wednesday (7 calendar days) |
| Thursday | Next Tuesday (5 calendar days later) | Next Thursday (7 calendar days) |
| Friday | Next Wednesday (5 calendar days later) | Next Friday (7 calendar days) |
The pattern is simple: start before the weekend and 3-5 business days means roughly 3-7 calendar days. Start on a Friday and even the fastest option lands the following week. Every public holiday inside the window adds one more day.
A quick example. You order a laptop on Thursday afternoon, and the store promises delivery in 3-5 business days. Day 1 is Friday. Day 2 is Monday, and day 3 is Tuesday, so the earliest delivery day is Tuesday. Day 5 lands on the following Thursday. If the Monday in between is a public holiday, everything moves one day later: earliest Wednesday, latest Friday. This is why the same promise can mean four days for one order and nine for another.
How to count business days
Follow these three steps and you will land on the right date:
- Start from the next business day. If you act on a Monday, day 1 is Tuesday. If you act on a Friday or a weekend, day 1 is Monday.
- Count forward, skipping Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
- Check the cut-off time. Many banks and services set a daily cut-off (often between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.). Miss it, and your request is treated as if it arrived the next business day.
If you count often, a spreadsheet does it for you. Excel and Google Sheets both have a built-in NETWORKDAYS function: give it a start date and an end date, and it returns the number of business days between them, with holidays as an optional extra list. If you prefer working in the browser, our free converter tools run online with no sign-up.
And if the company sits in another country, count with their calendar and their clock. A request sent late in your evening may already be the next day where they are, and their holidays, not yours, decide which days count.

Business days calculator
Do not want to count on a calendar? Use the calculator below. Pick the holiday calendar, enter a start date, and it will add business days for you, skipping weekends and that calendar’s public holidays. You can also count how many business days sit between two dates.
Business Days Calculator
Add business days to a date, or count the business days between two dates. Weekends are skipped, and so are public holidays for the calendar you pick. Holiday data covers 2026 and 2027 (US federal holidays as observed, UK bank holidays for England and Wales).

Business days around the world
The Monday to Friday pattern is common, but the holiday list is local, and that is where most counting mistakes happen.
- United States: Business days exclude the 11 federal holidays listed in 5 U.S.C. § 6103, from New Year’s Day to Christmas Day. After weekends and holidays, a US year had exactly 250 business days in both 2026 and 2027 (see the counted tables below). Financial deadlines lean on this calendar hard: since May 2024, US stock trades have settled in one business day (T+1) under SEC rules, and mortgage lenders must give borrowers their Closing Disclosure at least three business days before the loan closes under Consumer Financial Protection Bureau rules.
- United Kingdom: The term used is “bank holidays”. England and Wales have 8 bank holidays a year (GOV.UK), Scotland has 9, and Northern Ireland has 10. When a bank holiday falls on a weekend, a “substitute day”, usually the following Monday, takes its place.
- UAE and the Gulf: As noted above, the UAE’s weekend is Saturday and Sunday with a half day on Friday for federal staff, while several neighbours still use Friday and Saturday. A deadline that crosses regions can lose a day at each end, so always count with the calendar of the side doing the work.
Business days in 2026 and 2027, month by month
Most pages tell you there are “about 250” business days in a year. We counted them properly for 2026 and 2027, month by month, for both the United States and the United Kingdom (England and Wales). The method: count the Monday to Friday days in each month, then subtract that month’s public holidays that fall on a weekday. US counts use the federal holidays as observed on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management schedule. UK counts use the GOV.UK bank holidays for England and Wales, including substitute days.

Business days in 2027

|---|---|---|
| January | 19 | 20 |

| April | 22 | 22 |

| October | 20 | 21 |
| November | 20 | 22 |
| December | 22 | 21 |
| Total 2027 | 250 | 253 |
Two patterns are worth knowing for planning. First, the US total is 250 in both years, while the UK total is 253, because the UK has fewer weekday holidays (8 bank holidays against 11 US federal holidays). Second, no month is average: a US month can hold as few as 19 business days (February and November 2026) or as many as 23 (March 2027 in the UK table, July 2026 in the UK column). If your salary, rent, or delivery promise assumes every month has about 21 business days, some months will surprise you. Counts calculated by TechyHunt, October 2026.
Holiday season reality checks
The gap between business days and calendar days is widest in late November and December. These three examples use real upcoming dates.
Thanksgiving week, United States. You place an order on Wednesday 25 November 2026, and the store promises 3 business days. Thursday 26 November is Thanksgiving Day, so it does not count. Friday 27 November is day 1, Monday 30 November is day 2, and Tuesday 1 December is day 3. A “3 day” promise lands 6 calendar days later.
Christmas week, United States. You start on Wednesday 23 December 2026 with a 5 business day promise. Thursday 24 December is day 1, Friday 25 December is Christmas Day and does not count, and the count resumes on Monday 28 December. Day 5 lands on Thursday 31 December 2026, a total of 8 calendar days.
Christmas week, United Kingdom. The same start, Wednesday 23 December 2026, runs longer on the UK calendar. Thursday 24 December is day 1. Friday 25 December (Christmas Day) and Monday 28 December (Boxing Day substitute day) do not count, so day 2 is Tuesday 29 December. Friday 1 January 2027 is New Year’s Day, so day 5 does not land until Monday 4 January 2027. That is 5 business days stretched over 12 calendar days, and it crosses into a new year.
The lesson is simple: the closer a deadline sits to a public holiday, the more a business day promise stretches. Always run the count on a real calendar before you repeat the promise to someone else.
Where business days matter most
- Banking and payments. Transfers, cheque clearing, and deposit release dates are all quoted in business days. A deposit made on Friday may not be usable until Wednesday, or Thursday if Monday is a holiday.
- Shipping and deliveries. Courier estimates such as “1-3 business days” start from the first full business day after collection, not from the day you clicked buy.
- Contracts and SLAs. Response times, notice periods, and refund windows are usually written in business days. Read which definition the contract uses before you assume a date.
- Payroll and HR. Pay runs, leave approvals, and notice periods all follow the business-day calendar. That is one reason payroll software and workforce management tools build these rules in rather than leaving them to manual counting.
Copy-and-paste wording for contracts and emails
Vague deadline wording is where most business day disputes start. These three short templates fix the usual problems. Replace the parts in brackets.
Contract or proposal clause:
“Delivery will be made within [5] business days of [payment clearing / written approval]. A business day is a Monday to Friday that is not a public holiday in [England and Wales / the state of X]. The first business day is the first business day after the start date.”
Email confirming a deadline to a client:
“Confirming our timeline: starting from [date], [5] business days takes us to [end date]. This count skips weekends and public holidays here in [location]. If your calendar has a holiday we have not counted, tell us and we will adjust the date.”
Asking a supplier to pin down their promise:
“You quoted [3-5] business days. Please confirm the exact calendar date that gives us, and which country’s public holidays your count uses.”
Each template does the same three jobs: it fixes the number, names the holiday calendar, and states the exact end date, so neither side has to guess later.
Frequently asked questions
What does “3 business days” mean?
It means three weekdays (Monday to Friday) that are not public holidays. If you start counting on a Monday, the third business day is Thursday. If you start on a Friday, it is the following Wednesday.
Is Saturday a business day for banks?
No. Even if a branch is open, Saturday is never a banking or processing day under US banking rules, so deposits and transfers made on Saturday begin processing on Monday.
Do business days include public holidays?
No. A public holiday is never a business day, even when it falls on a weekday. If a holiday falls inside your window, add one day for it.
How many business days are there in a year?
In the US, exactly 250 in both 2026 and 2027, and 253 in both years in the UK (England and Wales), based on the month-by-month counts in this guide. A year has about 261 weekdays; subtract the public holidays that fall on weekdays and you get the real total for that year.
What is the difference between business days and working days?
A business day is set by the banking and office calendar (Monday to Friday, minus holidays). A working day depends on a person’s or company’s own schedule. A shop that opens on Saturdays has Saturday working days, but Saturday is still not a business day.
What happens if a deadline falls on a weekend?
In most legal and contract settings, a deadline that lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday rolls forward to the next business day. Check the exact wording of your agreement, as this rule comes from the contract or the law that governs it.
