Base64 Converter — Encode & Decode Base64 Online
Encode text to Base64 or decode Base64 to text, Unicode-safe.
Text → Base64
Unicode-safe: text is encoded as UTF-8 before Base64. Decoding accepts standard and URL-safe Base64. Runs 100% in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
What the Base64 converter does
Base64 represents any data using 64 safe characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /, with = for padding). It is used to carry data in places built for plain text, such as email attachments and data URLs. This tool encodes your text as UTF-8 first, so non-English characters encode and decode correctly.
How to use it
- Type or paste text into the left-hand box and click Convert to encode it.
- To decode, click Swap, paste the Base64 string and click Convert.
- If the input is not valid Base64, the tool shows an error instead of returning garbage.
- Use Copy or Clear as needed.
Worked examples
Encode: Hello → SGVsbG8=.
Unicode text: héllo → aMOpbGxv. The é is two UTF-8 bytes.
FAQ
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to protect passwords or private data.
Why is the output longer than my text?
Base64 turns every 3 bytes into 4 characters, so encoded data is about a third larger than the original.
What is the = at the end?
Padding. It is added when the input length is not a multiple of 3 bytes. The decoder also accepts input with the padding left off.
Does it decode URL-safe Base64?
Yes. The URL-safe characters - and _ are accepted when decoding.
