Binary Translator: Convert Binary to Text and Text to Binary

This binary translator converts binary code into readable text and turns text into binary code. It works as you type, supports UTF-8 characters, and shows a breakdown of each character so you can understand the result.

This tool runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server.

How to Use the Binary Translator

  1. Choose a mode. Select Binary to Text to read a binary message, or Text to Binary to encode your text. You can also use the swap button to switch between the two modes. For example, you can convert 01001000 01101001 into readable text.
  2. Enter your text or binary code. In Binary to Text mode, type or paste a sequence made of 0s and 1s. You can include spaces, leave the digits together, or place groups on separate lines. In Text to Binary mode, enter the words or characters you want to convert.
  3. Read and copy the result. This tool converts your input as you type. Use the Copy button to copy the result. The character breakdown also shows each character, its decimal value, and its binary value.

The tool is free to use and does not require an account. You can use it directly in your browser without installing software.

Binary to Text Example: How "Hi" Is Decoded

Binary code uses 0s and 1s to represent data. To turn binary into readable text, this tool interprets the bits using UTF-8, a text encoding system. Encoding means representing information in a format that a computer can store or process.

Here is how the word "Hi" is decoded.

Step 1: Split the binary into 8-bit groups.

The binary sequence is:

01001000 01101001

Each group contains eight bits, which form one byte.

  • First group: 01001000
  • Second group: 01101001

Step 2: Turn each group into a decimal number.

Each bit has a place value. The values increase from right to left, starting at 1 and doubling each time. Add the place values where the bit is 1.

The eight place values are 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1.

  • 01001000 = 64 + 8 = 72
  • 01101001 = 64 + 32 + 8 + 1 = 105

Step 3: Match each number to a letter.

The decimal value 72 represents the letter H. The decimal value 105 represents the letter i.

The final result is "Hi".

This binary code translator does the same steps for you, and the character breakdown shows the decimal value behind every letter.

How Binary Code Works

A bit is a single binary digit. It can be 0 or 1. Eight bits form one byte.

Computers use binary to represent different kinds of data. To represent text, they use a system called character encoding. This system connects characters to byte values.

ASCII is an older character standard that represents basic English letters, digits, and common symbols. UTF-8 supports those basic characters and a much wider range of languages and symbols.

For example, the character A is represented by 01000001. The character é uses two bytes in UTF-8: 11000011 10101001. This is why not every character uses exactly eight bits.

This tool uses UTF-8 to convert text, including accented letters, characters from other languages, and emoji.

Each letter below is shown as 8 bits. Uppercase and lowercase letters have different codes. The only difference is the third digit: 0 for uppercase, 1 for lowercase.

Why Your Binary Is Not Translating

If your input does not produce the expected text, check these common problems.

  • Characters other than 0 and 1: Binary data uses only the digits 0 and 1. Remove letters, punctuation, or other symbols from the binary input unless they are spaces or line breaks used to separate groups.
  • Bits not in groups of 8: Each letter needs 8 bits. Count the digits. The total should divide evenly by 8. If it does not, a digit is missing or extra.
  • Missing digits: A single missing or extra digit can change the grouping and produce incorrect output. Compare the input with the original message and restore any missing digits.
  • Wrong mode selected: Binary to Text reads binary data as text. Text to Binary converts readable characters into binary. Use the swap button to switch modes when needed.

Spaces are not required between every byte. This tool accepts binary with spaces, without spaces, or on separate lines. If the result still looks wrong, the binary may be a number, not text. See the next section.

Binary Text vs Binary Numbers

Binary can represent either a number or encoded text. These are different uses of the same digits.

For example, the number 5 is written as 101 in binary. However, the character "5" is text. In UTF-8, that character is represented by 00110101.

The difference matters because the number 5 and the character "5" are not stored in the same way. One is a numerical value. The other is a character with a text encoding.

The following examples show binary sequences interpreted as ordinary numbers:

Binary valueNumber of bitsDecimal value
0010155
10101521
01011511
0010110722

These sequences are valid binary numbers, but they are not complete eight-bit groups. Their decimal values can be calculated directly.

This tool translates text, not plain numbers between decimal and binary. To convert a number from one number system to another, you need a number-base converter. To read text represented in binary, use this tool's Binary to Text mode.

Binary Translator FAQ

How do I convert binary to English?

Select Binary to Text mode and enter your binary sequence. This tool uses UTF-8 to decode the data into readable text.

How do I convert text to binary?

Select Text to Binary mode and type the text you want to convert. This tool converts the characters into their UTF-8 binary representation as you type, and you can copy the result.

Can I translate binary from a picture?

This tool does not read images. Type the digits into the input box, or use your phone's text scanner to copy the digits from the picture and paste them into the tool.

Does it work with emoji and other languages?

Yes. This tool uses UTF-8, which supports accented letters, text from many languages, and emoji. Characters can use different numbers of bytes, so their binary representations may be longer than those of basic English letters.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. This tool runs fully in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to a server.

Is binary code a safe way to hide a message?

No. Binary is a way to encode information, not encrypt it. Anyone who understands the encoding can read the message, so binary should not be used to protect private information.
